7 Ways To Prep Skin For Cooler Weather

Does anyone else’s skin start to dry out in the fall? *Raises hand* because mine definitely does. The fall and winter are nice but they bring cooler weather, so we are more likely to experience our skin drying out a bit more than usual. I typically have oily skin but still experience dryness around my cheeks, chin and mouth. As soon as the temperature drops, I know I need to start incorporating my winter skincare favorites into my everyday routine. Here are my tips for taking care of your skin during the fall and winter.

1. Integrate products with hyaluronic acid or add a hyaluronic acid serum to your routine.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that our bodies produce naturally. It’s often found in the eyes, and joints to act as a lubricant. When added to the skin it helps keep the skin hydrated, flexible and smooth. I quite literally feel that I’m glowing so beautifully when I layer hyaluronic acid under my skincare.

2. Reduce the use of harsh face washes.

If you’re using a harsh and super drying face wash regularly, you may want to consider reducing its use in the cooler months. I’ve found that face washes that are super cleansing and exfoliating will dry your skin quickly during the fall/winter. I reduce the use of my exfoliating face washes to about 1-2 times a week and the rest of the week I use a gentle face wash like this gel face wash from Glossier or this hyaluronic acid face wash from Laneige.

3. Weekly moisturizing masks.

I love using some type of skincare mask at least once a week. Sometimes it’s a detox mask, sometimes it’s an exfoliating mask and sometimes I need moisture so I whip out a moisturizing mask. Masks are really helpful for giving your skin a boost of whatever it needs. Find a mask that works for you and use it consistently for the best results.

4. Use a richer, thicker face moisturizer.

During the warmer months, I love using a light and milky moisturizer like my fave from Glossier but during the fall/winter, that just won’t cut it. When the temperature drops, I grab my thicker moisturizer like this night cream from Urban Skin Rx. It moisturizes and hydrates my skin without clogging my pores. I love that the product keeps me well moisturized all night – I wake up barely needing anything. They also have a lovely daytime moisturizer that is on the richer end that keeps you hydrated all day. Another favorite is the water bank moisturizer from Laniege. I initially tried this in a sample version from Sephora and I had to have the real deal because it was that good. It has a very silky yet deeply moisturizing feel to it and my skin loves it.

5. Seal moisturizer with a lightweight oil.

One of my hacks for keeping my skin moisturized well throughout the day is layering a tiny bit of oil on it. I do this either after applying my moisturizer or after my sunscreen. I love using argan oil for this purpose.

6. Nightly lip treatment.

Most people remember to apply lip care during the day but don’t forget about it at night. We lose a lot of moisture in our skin during the evening hours and this includes lips. My final skincare step at night is to always finish with lip care. I know it works well because I wake up with super-hydrated lips. I love using Laneige lip sleeping mask or this very affordable brand from Target.

7. Add a humidifier to your room.

I initially purchased a humidifier to help me with morning stuffiness but I soon learned that it has lots of skincare benefits as well. I chose the Canopy humidifier and it touts that not only does it help alleviate cold and flu symptoms but it helps combat skin dryness, and helps promotes a healthy skin barrier. I’ve been using it for about 10 months now and I co-sign all these claims. In addition to these benefits, I love that the parts of the humidifier are dishwasher safe and I love the essential oil pucks that can be added to the humidifier. All of the scents smell so good and they smell like nothing I have experienced before. It adds such a nice scent to my bedroom, I feel like I’m walking into a spa. I think the biggest selling point for me though is the fact that with the way it’s designed there’s virtually no way for it to grow mold. I absolutely love it and plan to add more to other rooms in the future. Check out the Canopy humidifier here.
